It will provide your hunt details and the steps you need to take to prepare for your hunt. Please complete the steps ASAP.
Here’s your next step:

We want hunters to be happy with the elk hunt on the property. Durst Mountain is a great place for elk. That said, our average bull elk have been around 300 B&C (most bulls range in score from 260-310 B&C). There is potential to harvest larger elk, but we want to be upfront and transparent on the averages. We provide this information because we want hunters to make an informed decision when considering applying for the Durst Mountain CWMU bull elk hunt. See the picture gallery below for reference.
This hunt is physical. The elk typically do not stay close to the roads, and hiking is necessary to harvest elk. Sometimes bulls are harvested close to roads and vehicle access areas, but it is not common. The more you can hike and be mobile, the higher your chances are of harvesting a bull and seeing more mature bull elk.
To ensure a quality hunting experience for all public hunters, all scheduling and inquiring must be done through the Durst Mountain CWMU Operator. Individual guides are NOT permitted to schedule hunts or deviate from this hunt information.
Our goal is to provide you with a quality hunting experience. Your job is to enjoy the experience and conduct yourselves in a manner so that all other guests have a quality experience as well.
Hunting Rules
Safety comes first; anyone acting careless or inconsiderate will be removed from the Durst Mountain CWMU.
Hunting
Take time to shoot and sight in your rifle before your hunt. Know your hunting and shooting limits. Understand your rifle.
Hunters are allowed to shoot only one animal, of which they have a permit. Once you hit an animal and/or draw blood, that is your animal. If you wound, you cannot shoot another animal. Please be aware of your animal and its surroundings, know your rifle, and pick your shots carefully.
All game laws must be strictly complied with, including but not limited to tagging animals, care of meat, hunting from roads or vehicles, etc. All hunters must abide by Utah state laws as they pertain to wildlife. Click HERE for Utah Wildlife Laws
All hunters and guests must always wear a hunter-orange hat and vest while hunting.
Most other wildlife species found on the CWMU are protected by state law and/or require special licenses or permits to ‘take’ these animals. Hunting other wildlife species of any kind is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to: coyotes, badgers, ground squirrels, foxes, grouse, and waterfowl.
Hunters may only hunt for, shoot from, and shoot an animal within the boundaries of the CWMU.
No pre-season scouting.
Weapons allowed: any legal weapon.
Follow basic gun safety:
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
No ammunition in the rifle chamber until ready to shoot (do not hike, drive, etc., with ammunition in the chamber)
Do not rely on the gun’s safety.
Be sure of your target, your line of fire, and what lies beyond your target.
Vehicles/Driving & Roads etc
Horses are allowed.
ATVs and side-by-sides are allowed. They must stay on main roads and well-established two tracks.
No snowmobiles
We require a 4x4 vehicle with good off-road tires. You should also bring tire chains, a shovel, extra clothes, food, a flashlight, a sleeping bag, etc., should you become stuck or break down.
Hunters are not to drive off the main gravel roads or well-established two-tracks (these are clearly marked)
Do not abandon your vehicles if you become stuck or break down.
All gates are to remain ‘as they were’ when you approached them. If they are open, leave them open; if they are closed, close them.
Be safe and courteous while driving on the roads. Drive respectively and cautiously.
Care must be taken to avoid damage to Ranch roads! During extreme weather, some of the roads will be closed (for safety reasons)
No chasing, pursuing, pushing, herding, or harassing game with a vehicle.
